The truth is, I’ve always loved dogs, but the one who truly stole my heart and showed me what that love really means was my English Bulldog, Mr. Butters. He was the definition of personality, a little stubborn, a little goofy, and completely obsessed with sleeping, snoring, and eating snacks like it was his full-time job. I raised him in Philly but when I lived in Houston for a few years for work, we used to head down to Galveston Island together every week. He loved the beach as much as I did, but after a couple of hours, he was ready to retreat to the car, the AC blasting, and a snack in his mouth. He passed away the night before my birthday in 2016, yeah, not exactly the gift I wanted, but the lessons he gave me never left.
