Will Cody Rhodes finish the story at Wrestlemania? Maybe. Maybe not.
Section 113. Row 12. Seat 3.
Why am I telling you this? It's because that's where I sat for Wrestlemania 15 on Sunday, March 28th, 1999.
Who headlined that show? My two idols growing up: Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. It was one of the best nights of my life and I was lucky enough to see history being made right in front of my eyes.
Let's fast forward to Wrestlemania 40. It's taking place in my hometown of Philadelphia. I live minutes away from the stadium. Am I going to be watching Wrestlemania Night 2 in person? Hell yeah I am!
Wresltemania Night 2 takes place on Sunday, April 7th, 2024. That's 9142 days since Wrestlemania 15.
That's 789,868,800 seconds and 219,408 hours apart from each other. Is it that obvious how excited I am for this?
Professional wrestling, aka Sports Entertainment, when it's on top of it's game, is one of the best, if not THE best, forms of live entertainment in the world.
Right now, the WWE has it's main superstar: Cody Rhodes. The son of a plumber, Cody is listed at a height of 6'1. He's got that perfect combination of in ring skill, that comic book superhero look, and the promo skills on the microphone that would make the all time greats proud.
Cody Rhodes has worked his ass off ever since coming back to the WWE. Last year at Wrestlemania 39, the WWE universe thought they were finally going to get their wish. Cody Rhodes winning the WWE championship in the main event at Wrestlemania was the storybook ending that they all wanted. Roman Reigns? Yeah, he could care less about your storybook ending. And that's why he won. 1. 2.3.
All year long the WWE Universe waited for The Royal Rumble to see if Cody Rhodes would win. And boy did he win. Cody and CM Punk were the last two WWE Superstars in the ring until Cody threw Punk over the top rope. As Cody celebrated on the top rope with all of his fans, the camera cut to Roman Reigns looking down at him while sitting in a club box. Cody was pointing at Roman and the Wrestlemania sign. The WWE universe was finally getting their wish.
That was until this past Friday night on Smackdown. Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes were in the middle of the ring until Cody Rhodes told Roman Reigns that he no longer wanted to face him at Wrestlemania anymore. And that was because he spoke to someone that knows Roman better than Roman knows himself: his cousin, The Rock.
The Rock's music hit in Birmingham, Alabama and the roof almost blew off the building. The Rock and Cody faced each other in the middle of the ring. They hugged. The Rock whispered something in Cody's ear and no one knows what was said. Will we ever find out? I'm sure we will. But then something crazy happened: Cody left the ring. You could feel the entire fan base of the WWE have a heart attack all at once.
As Cody Rhodes walked backstage, The Rock waited to finally, and the Rock means finally, turn his shoulder so he was facing his cousin, the WWE champion, Roman Reigns. This is the match that people have been discussing for years. But after all of those years of "what if's" and "will The Rock ever come back", the only thing the fans are talking about is #WeWantCody.
Roman Reigns and The Rock were in the middle of the ring for the first time since 2015. Roman Reigns won the Royal Rumble because The Rock came out and saved him from getting jumped. They were booed from the fans as The Rock lifted Roman's arm in victory. Ever since that night the internet has been buzzing for a dream match. And where did the Royal Rumble take place in 2015? Philadelphia. Where is Wrestlemania 40 taking place? Philadelphia. Coincidence? I think not.
I know fans are really, really pissed off about Cody losing his Wrestlemania opportunity. But did he really lose it? I don't think so. I think this is going to be an all time swerve by the WWE writers to get the fans pissed off and tuned into the show.
I have a feeling that Triple H and the writers at the WWE are sitting back and enjoying all of the hate that they created. If The Rock didn't come back and take away Cody's title, would I be writing this article right now? Probably not. They wanted to create the mystery of "what if". They wanted someone to become the bad guy, this time it was The Rock, because the more the fans feel like Cody is the victim, the more his story matters when he finishes it at Wrestlemania.
Like I said in the beginning, these people are professionals. They are BY FAR the best in the world at what they do. For all of the fans that are threatening to takeover the shows: stop. You're embarrassing yourself. There is so much TV left and there's so many chances for this to play itself out from now until Wrestlemania Night 2.
Let the superstars do what they do.
Let the writers do what they do.
Enjoy this moment as a fan because this story line will never be created again.
You can cheer. You can boo. But regardless of how you decide to respond, just understand that this is only the beginning.
And boy is this going to be fun!
PS: I'm going to be writing my predictions for Nights 1 & 2 of Wrestlemania soon!
